Free webinar open to all language educators:  "Harnessing Open Educational Resources to Promote Intercultural Communicative Competence"

This talk will explore techniques for writing open educational resource (OER) activities that increase learners' intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and engage them with a variety of authentic texts. OER activities that introduce novice and intermediate learners to socio-cultural phenomena via authentic texts – such as photographs, blogs and vlogs -- should explicitly guide them through level-appropriate reading, listening/viewing, and discursive strategies, and encourage them to investigate, explain and reflect upon the cultural perceptions, practices and products they encounter. The presenter will also share practical tips (and resources) for finding OER materials and incorporating them properly into one's own OER publications.

Presenter: Dr. Jeannette Okur coordinates the Turkish Studies program in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, and teaches a variety of courses in language, literature, film and cultural studies. Her Turkish textbook, Her Şey Bir Merhaba ile Başlar, accompanying public Canvas course, and Youtube channel comprise a media-rich open educational resource (OER), newly published by the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning
