    What is misguided about all the sessions and advertisements for "ways to get your students to speak more?" What does the science say about whether students can talk their way to acquisition and proficiency? 

    Well. . . here it is in a nutshell (less than 10 minutes).

    This video on Acquisition Classroom Memo #3 reviews the 1985 report that launched the output hypothesis. Numerous problems with the hypothesis are discussed and the roles of output in relation to input clarified. What's clear is that it's time teachers reconsider why they want their students talking.
