Reeser, T. W. (2003). Teaching French cultural analysis: A dialogic approach. French Review, 76(4), (772-785).

Although this article refers to French and Francophone culture, high school and college teachers of all languages could benefit from this article. Using examples from films and other kinds of texts, the author describes how the Cultures goals of the Standards can engage students in a dialogic process of analysis. Task-based activities with instructor guidance can lead students to think about and articulate perspectives—dominant perspectives, minority perspectives, etc. of a culture's products and practices. Standardizing cultural instruction across levels and schools must involve agreeing that culture is not about learning content but about developing increasingly sophisticated skills of analysis.
