Hello All!

My Spanish 4 students are studying equality and I am looking for a film that could close our unit.  Does anyone have suggestions for a Spanish Language film dealing with issuses of equality?  It could be social equality, economic equality, equality of opportunities, etc.

This is a high school class so preferably something that I could show with minimal cuts.

Thank you!

It has been a while since I have seen this movie - but it is one of two that come to mind

Gigante     the protagonist is huge and thus confronted with negative stereotypes

also

Machuca  takes place in Chile, full length, and reflects the move towards democracy with Allende and then the Pinochet coup that affects society on a human level.  My students  (seniors and juniors) really liked it and thought it was powerful...

if you find something else, would love to hear about it!

I have never seen these films, but there is a festival called "Ellas Crean" that addresses gender equality in Spain and other parts of Europe across generations.  The website has a good bit of resources and one page that has some interesting film suggestions:  http://www.ellascrean.com/cine/ventana.html# I am not sure how appropriate it would be to show in class; you should definitely preview it! :)

As a matter of fact, the other day, I was just recommending to someone the film Tambien La LLuvia, or in English - Even the Rain.  I came across it in Redbox a couple weeks ago, but if it's not in a Redbox in your area I'm sure you could find it on Netflix.  It was actually a really great movie and there was little to no objectionable content.  The story is that there is a film crew who is shooting a movie about Columbus first encountering American natives, and they decide to film using locals in Cochabamba.  They end up having problems filming because the Cochabamba Water War of, taking place at the same time, and some of their actors get involved in the protests. The whole film is in Spanish.  It's "Not Rated" and the only objectionable material is some foul language, minor political violence, and some of the actors are dressed in "native garb" inb parts of the movie (not much clothing) but I think Spanish IV kids can handle that.  In terms of equality, this theme is all over the movie!  Here's a link to the trailer:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbpdeI0ugGc

I hope you find it useful!

I think Hombres con armas (Central American medical, social, racial and economic inequalities) and Diarios de motocicleta (South American medical, social, racial and economic inequalities) would be excellent options for your class.  My students also really like _Amar te duele_, which deals with economic inequality in a Romeo and Juliet type romantic drama.  Consider too the Spanish language documentary _Which Way Home_ which deals with child immigrants from Central America seeking opportunities in the U.S.

Without a second thought, Machuca came to mind.  Chilean boys become friends across socioeconomic lines at through transitions under Allende and the Pinochet take coup. There are some very choice scenes about class difference.

I'm sure there are many, many other suggestions that will be great.

I concur with the choice of Machuca for your theme.  It is very well done, and would fit perfectly with your theme of equality!
